Identity and cookies

Learn how Graytower keeps a browser visitor together and what happens when identity changes.

The default browser tracker sets a first-party _gt_id cookie with an anonymous visitor ID. Its configured lifetime is one year. On a registered root domain, the cookie can be read across that root's subdomains. Graytower also stores session state in the browser. A Website can instead use cookieless tracking, which has shorter-lived visitor estimates and no persistent anonymous browser identity.

The ID helps Graytower recognize later pageviews and custom events from the same browser. It also gives your checkout a visitor reference to pass to Stripe. It is not a name or email address by itself.

When identity changes

If the cookie is removed, blocked, or unavailable in another browser, Graytower may see a new anonymous visitor. After sign-in, call window.graytower("identify", ...) with a stable user ID or email to link activity where the identity can be matched. Call window.graytower("reset") before a different person uses the same browser account session.

Graytower cannot infer that two unrelated anonymous IDs belong to one person. Payment matching works best when you carry the visitor ID into checkout.

For the roles and obligations that govern Graytower's processing, see the Privacy Policy, Cookies & tracking, and Data Processing Agreement.
